Welcome to the Advance Ticket guide

Advance tickets are normally the cheapest tickets available. If you know when you are travelling you should always check first to see if cheap advance tickets are still available for your journey, even up to midnight the day before you travel - you can collect your tickets at many stations the following morning.

What are advance tickets?

They are single, one-way tickets, available for both first and standard classes, if you wish to return then you purchase two tickets, one for your outward journey and one back - mix and match!

They must be purchased in advance but can still be available up to midnight the day before. You can buy them online and then collect them from ticket machines at many stations.

They are cheaper tickets but vary in price dependent upon the time of travel and availability. They are quota-controlled so the longer you wait, the less choice you have.

It is very important to be aware that they are only valid on the dates and trains shown on the tickets and you cannot break your journey except to change to/from connecting trains if applicable.

If any of your designated trains are delayed or cancelled during your journey you are allowed to continue your journey on the next available train(s) but this does not apply to non-railway delays e.g. you are late and miss your train!

They normally become available 12 weeks in advance, you can use most railcards to purchase them and you get a reserved seat.

Where can I purchase advance tickets?
